Clickbait or Prophetic - What will be real impact of AI on employment?
It’s hard to read a business article these days which doesn’t reference AI, and for good reason. It’s already reshaping how we work, live, and lead, and we’re still only scratching the surface of what’s possible. And most of those articles are forecasting enormous reductions in employment numbers.
But here’s the thing: every industrial revolution has brought with it loud headlines about mass job losses. And yet every single one has ultimately created more jobs than it destroyed. The work changed. The skills evolved. But the workforce adapted, and ultimately thrived.
Will this time be different? Maybe. It’s certainly easier to envision which jobs might disappear than to predict the new ones we haven’t imagined yet.
To illustrate, in sectors like Australian banking, you might think the introduction of online banking in the early 2000's would have resulted a huge reduction in employment. Suprisingly that industry has seen no net reduction in employment, but instead an example of how technology reshapes rather than erases roles - often creating higher-skilled, higher-paid opportunities in the process.
As a leader, the real question isn’t what will AI do? It’s how are you framing this shift inside your organisation?
If the only message your team is hearing is about efficiency and cost-cutting, don’t be surprised if they’re quietly updating their CVs. Fear is contagious - but so is optimism.
Instead, lead the conversation. Talk about how AI can remove the mundane and elevate the human. Focus your team on the value only they can deliver - creativity, empathy, strategy, insight. Build confidence, not confusion.
Remember: your messaging is culture-building. Are you fueling fear, or inspiring future-focused growth?

Last week I spoke on a panel at Bond University about - what else - AI. The conversation focused on ethics, and while perspectives differed, one truth rang clear: our humanity is still our greatest asset.
The future of work is human-led and tech-empowered, and your messaging as a leader matters more than ever.
Ready to Rise is where I help you own your unique leadership strengths, scale wisely, and lead through change. If ever there was a moment to rise with clarity and courage it’s now.
What are you most excited about - or terrified by - in this next era of AI driven industrial revolution?
